Sand Igloos

Inspired by Winter Stations Design Challenge
Toronto Woodbine Beach

Summary

The annual winter stations design competition for Toronto’s Woodbine beach challenges designers to bring revitalize and repurpose the beach during the cold, winter months. My design prompt involved contrasting the themes of the winter and summer seasons by incorporating elements within the beach environment during both seasons.

Constraint

The only thing remaining on the beach during the winter are the permanent life-guard stands. The winter station installations must be built using these existing life-guard stands as a foundation or support. The main structure of the Sand Igloo uses the life guard as a central support element.

Experience

This experience of this installation mimics the lazy lounging that happens on the beach during the summer. The structure provides a warm shelter where visitors can sip hot chocolate and hang-out, just like they might have relaxed with an ice-cream cone in the summer.

It brings visitors together in a community experience like the purpose of the traditional igloo.
