Kabubu:
Refugee Integration Workshop

About

Kabubu is a french association which promotes professional and social inclusion of exiled persons through the unifying values of sports!

Myself and another designer were called to do a design sprint with Kabubu. The outcome would support the team as they launched a new initiative for corporate awareness surrounding migrant issues and potential to help.

The Brief

Challenge

How to share information and build awareness around migration in a work environment through a playful/interactive workshop?

Deliverable

A 2.5h to 3h team building workshop providing a playful learning user experience including facilitation guidelines.

Constraints

- Can be both facilitated live or in a zoom call
- A non-native french speaker can play a part
- Should create interactions between people
- Use sports as a leitmotiv
- Not convey a commiserating image of migrants

Investigation

We worked closely with Simoné, co-director from the Kabubu team, to develop the foundation of the workshop.

  • We collected resources and learnings from previous workshops the team had done.

  • We collected research resources to learn more about refugee integration in France.

  • We collected insights about the target audience for the workshop.

  • We also collected insights about similar projects and initiatives regarding refugee integration in France and internationally.

Ideation and Prototyping

We brainstormed a few ideas that could be transferred between in person and online meetings. We settled on series of events that involved a race between multiple small teams to collect the most points.

Testing

The first workshop was tested with a corporate team and feedback was collected based on their impression of the workshop.

The workshop was created to adapt to the constraints of lockdown. We tested it via zoom with a corporate team.

Feedback and Final Deliverable

The feedback from the initial prototype testing with a corporate team and with Kabubu resulted in:

  • More discussion between each challenge round.

  • Adding a bonus challenge that asked the team to take what they learned into action by becoming a partner with Kabubu or engaging more with initiatives for migrants integration in their team and community.

  • More reflection on terminology and motivation related to migration.
